India – Amidst the Shadows from the Past

India praises herself to be the biggest democracy in the world. No doubt about that when we look on the estimated 1.25 billion citizens of India, and about her 800 million voters. That might be beneficial for India’s cultural ego and patriotism. But when it comes to the state of her residents India’s elites hasn’t done enough by far and it seems that in line with their traditions the governing caste didn’t and doesn’t feel responsible for the fate of the people they rule. So, despite the efforts and promises of India’s current prime minister Narendra Modi, India is still the world’s biggest poor house, lacking of to provide to her constituancy solutions for basic human needs such as food security, sanitation standards, housing and infrastructure, and proper education for boys AND girls. All these violations of human rights are the heritage of Indias long history. They are the shadows from the past. Therefore if India wants to be respected in the world community, it has to take the effort to do her homework in getting rid of the remnants of her authoritarian caste society, disenfranchising of girls and women, letting behind the majority of her people in stark misery, her steep hierarchies and archaic top-down structure, and other long lasting traditions India is so famous for. All of these ineqalities and injustices hold India back of entering the civilized world. India I know you can do better!
